Karmavir
Bhaurao Patil (1887-1959) was an Indian social reformer, educationist, and
thinker who is best known for his contributions to the education of the Dalit
(formerly known as "untouchable") community in India.
He was born in a small village in Maharashtra and grew up in poverty,
experiencing discrimination due to his caste.
Bhaurao
Patil realized the importance of education in improving the lives of
marginalized communities and founded the Satya Shodhak Samaj in 1907,
an organization that aimed to remove caste barriers and promote education
among Dalits. In 1913, he established the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha
(Organization for the Welfare of the Depressed Classes), which provided
education, health, and legal aid to Dalits.
He
also founded the Rayat Shikshan Sanstha (Farmers' Education Society) in 1919,
which became one of the largest educational institutions in Maharashtra and
played a significant role in spreading education among rural communities.
The Sanstha also emphasized the importance of vocational education and
women's education.
Bhaurao
Patil was a strong advocate of social justice and believed that education was
the key to empowering marginalized communities and bringing about social
change. He received several awards for his contributions
to education, including the Padma Bhushan in 1958.
