Election
Commission of India (ECI)
The
Election Commission of India (ECI) is an autonomous constitutional authority
responsible for administering and overseeing the electoral processes in
India. It was established in 1950 under the Constitution
of India and is responsible for conducting elections to the Lok Sabha,
Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and the offices of the President and
Vice-President of India.
The
ECI is composed of three members, including the Chief Election
Commissioner (CEC) and two Election Commissioners, all of whom are appointed
by the President of India. The ECI is responsible for ensuring free
and fair elections by enforcing the Model Code of Conduct, which
lays down guidelines for political parties and candidates to follow during
election campaigns. It also registers political parties and monitors
their finances.
The
ECI uses electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter-verified paper audit
trails (VVPATs) to ensure transparent and accurate voting.
It also provides voter education and outreach programs to increase voter
participation.
The ECI
has been instrumental in ensuring the success of India's democratic system by
conducting transparent and fair elections that reflect the will of the people.
