Janata Party (BJP)
The
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a right-wing political party in India, founded
in 1980. The party is one of the two major political parties in India, along
with the Indian National Congress. The BJP has a nationalist and conservative
ideology, and has been associated with Hindu nationalism.
The
BJP rose to national prominence in the 1990s, particularly after the demolition
of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992. The party has been in power at the
national level since 2014, with Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India.
The BJP has also formed governments in several Indian states.
The
party's policies have focused on economic development, national security, and
social conservatism. The BJP has launched several initiatives such as Make in
India, Digital India, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and Jan Dhan Yojana. The party's
flagship scheme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, aimed at financial inclusion
and banking for the unbanked population of India.
The
BJP's rise to power has been marked by controversy, including allegations of
Hindu nationalist extremism, suppression of dissent, and attacks on religious
minorities. Despite these controversies, the party remains a dominant political
force in India, with a significant presence in both the national and state-level
politics.
