Rajiv
Gandhi was an Indian politician and the 6th Prime Minister of India. He was
born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and was the elder son
of Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi.
Rajiv
Gandhi was educated at the elite Doon School in Dehradun, and later went on to
study engineering at Trinity College, University of Cambridge in the United
Kingdom. However, he did not complete his degree and returned to India in 1966
after the death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi.
Rajiv
Gandhi entered politics in 1980 after the death of his mother, Indira Gandhi.
He was elected to the Indian Parliament and served as a member of the Lok Sabha
(lower house) from 1981 until his assassination in 1991.
In
1984, following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi became the
Prime Minister of India. During his tenure as Prime Minister, he introduced
several important economic and social reforms, including the introduction of
computers in government offices, liberalization of the economy, and decentralization
of power to local governments.
Rajiv
Gandhi's tenure as Prime Minister was also marked by several controversies,
including the Bhopal gas tragedy, the Shah Bano case, and the Sri Lankan civil
war. He was assassinated on May 21, 1991, by a suicide bomber of the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during an election campaign in Sriperumbudur,
Tamil Nadu.
